Ringworm Canine

In dogs, ringworm canine is the most common skin disorder and is highly contagious. Studies show that ringworm canine can be acquired by contact with a ringworm infected dog, cat, soil and humans. Ringworm can also be acquired when in contact with contaminated items such as collars, bedding or blankets etc.

Ringworm symptoms can be circular patches or broken hair that has spread quickly, evidence of skin lesions, crusty or scaly skin and painful and itchy hairless skin patchy areas. Once one or more of these symptoms appear, you should seek a veterinarian for the proper diagnosis.

If you have one or more pets in the household, commitment is the key to success regarding your ringworm situation. Infected pets/animals are constantly shedding spores into the environment and is therefore just as important to disinfect everything as it is with the ringworm treatment of the infected pet/s.

The two primary medications being used to treat canine ringworm is Itraconazole and Griseofulvin. Dermatologists disagree as to which is best. The two must be given with food, are relatively expensive, and have serious potential in causing birth defects in pregnant pets. The treatment time frame is typically continued for one to two months and should not be stopped until the pet culture results are negative. Early termination of the treatment process will lead to recurrence of the disease.

Itraconazole is highly effective in the treatment of this fungus infection. It is available in capsule form. Nausea is the side effect and is probably the reason it is passed by in favor for griseofulvin. Itraconazole is also great for treating many life-threatening fungal infections whereby griseofulvin treats only ringworm infections.

Griselfulvin (Fulvicin) must be taken with a fatty meal to be effective. Side effects can include nausea, liver disease and serious white blood cell changes depending on the pet and its health condition. Griselfulvin is the preferred medication treatment of ringworm and is usually less expensive than Itraconazole.

Several studies have shown that the fungal infection should eventually resolve on its own in about four months. Yes this is a very long time for the contamination to be occurring continuously and therefore the vets recommended treatment is suggested.
